And lithium? That incredible metal - the lightest in the universe, is pretty damn abundant. In fact one small mine in Southwest Western Australia provides around a quarter of the world's battery grade Li. The kids will be fine.

A couple of issues with that idea. In order to put off paying your tyre tax, you might be motivated to run them bald... and when you do finally pay for the tyres, you're up for 3 years worth of tax.

It's an excise on product we consume a lot of, but really shouldn't. But if a universal RUC were to be applied, fuel excise can be left as a pollution tax.
And yes, we spent $38 billion on roads last year. It's obscene.

But is it fair to pin the blame for declining fuel excise revenue on EVs, when hybrids have been around in larger numbers for much longer?
If we're to charge for road use, the scheme should cover all vehicles regardless of fuel source. Fuel excise is already a very efficient pollution tax.

In the interests of science and statistics, check your odometer today, and in a year's time, and report back. You'll be surprised where your annual total sits on the bell curve.

What it does show is that while some regional postcodes have longer commutes than others, there's just as many which have shorter commutes than the capitals. The region with the longest commutes was the south coast of NSW; narrow coastal urban development tends to do that.

Small electric vehicles would be extremely popular is most markets. Unfortunately most manufacturers aren't offering them because the margins are much thinner.
