We need to know what humans do before we argue that machines can do it just the same. There can’t be AI literacy without a literacy in being human: how we make meaning in work and life, distinguishing the artificial from the imaginary from the true. mail.cyberneticforests.com/human-litera...
Really appreciated this discussion with @tressiemcphd.bsky.social on AI in higher ed and what we and students are losing in terms of opportunities to go from struggling to mastering something, and learning as a relational/social process. www.nytimes.com/audio/app/20...
Show up with Valerie, Jenna, and Ian on August 11, 5-6:30PM to the Kill the Cuts Town Hall with our WA Rep. Pramila Jayapal, where we'll highlight all the amazing science being done by workers at UW and why it deserves funding. 🔬🔥🌱

We on the AAUP Committee on AI have been connecting with members on their concerns with technology. We’ve been developing recommendations to loosen or even refuse big tech’s hold on higher ed, for better working and learning conditions, and building solidarity around many fights tied to tech.
Amazon workers in Delta have won the battle to unionize after the BC Labour Relations Board found the company committed “serious” offences to try and block an organizing drive. #bclab
This is an excellent point. That it's possible to talk about the impact of tech as somewhat separate from whether it does what it is claimed as doing.
I know many recent PhDs are clearing out their carrels/offices, or relocating to start an academic job elsewhere. If you have books you no longer want/need, consider donating them to Bluestockings. If you're in NY, you can drop them off—or mail them using Pirate Ship, which offers excellent rates.
We're organizing a #CSCW2025 workshop exploring oppositional responses to AI (actions that attempt to resist, not use, oppose, or even destroy AI). We seek participants who study such responses and/or engage in them. See our call for participation here: oppositiontoai.wordpress.com
I'm biased, but this report is a must-read for anyone looking to understand the state of AI in 2025.
It explains how AI is entrenching power for big tech and the oligarch class, speeding deregulation, dislodging human expertise and threatening workers—and how there's still time to refuse all that.
Yesterday, Microsoft announced it will cut nearly 2,000 jobs in WA. UW News spoke with Samuel So, @uw-hcde.bsky.social, about shifting views of the tech industry, workplace organizing and why workers find themselves in a state of “cruel optimism” with the industry.

Why are universities pivoting to AI after initial panic about students cheating? @tressiemcphd.bsky.social gives a mini lecture on AI, politics, and inequality building on @dmgreene.bsky.social's work on the "access doctrine" www.instagram.com/tressiemcphd...
somewhere in the Lesbian Avengers handbooks, it says something like, don't come to a meeting saying, "we should do this," come saying "I want to help make this happen."
Silicon Valley is coming for faculty governance. The vultures are circling the corpse of the neoliberal American university. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
Our feelings and emotions are not wrong. They are a valid response to what is going on. But if we don't learn how to process them, they will wreak havoc on not only our relationships (which we will need to fight what is happening), but ourselves as well.

Avian flu is a conservation and public health crisis.
18,000 dead baby elephant seals. Terns having seizures on beaches. Outbreaks among livestock. Human deaths.
Draining research funds and gagging the CDC is dangerous for the whole planet. So are proposed mask bans. We need those n95s.
