We want to enhance existing digital services while driving innovation and strengthening the sectorโs data capabilities.
We are taking an open and collaborative approach to this project, and we need your support and input.

Supported by DCMS, the ODI team are co-designing, testing, and proving the value of a modern, open data infrastructure for volunteering.
A new white paper from @sport-england-se.bsky.social and @odihq.bsky.social shows how better access to physical activity data can help health care teams signpost people to trusted local options โ and take pressure off the NHS. Find out more.

I'd happily talk to anyone who can help us build a modern, open, data infrastructure for volunteering.
28.03.2025 13:54 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm the treasurer of a large Scout Group in Sheffield. In my volunteer role I see the power of volunteering every day. Volunteering makes people happier and strengthens communities. Investing in data infrastructure to help more people give their time is a no-brainer.
28.03.2025 13:54 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Following a roundtable we hosted a few weeks ago at @odihq.bsky.social I have written a long-form blog post about data and volunteering:

Wow, Wow, WOW!
Back in 2010 I was working with HMLR to get their data published under the INSPIRE regs.
This week Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook has written to HMLR asking them to make this data open and link title numbers to "INSPIRE ID"

Finally I emphasised the need to work openly & collaboratively to standardise & join up physical activity data integrating it with NHS data & smart data from wearables. I talked about the need for organisations to invest in trustworthy data practices, including capabilities, that enable data sharing
05.03.2025 09:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I discussed the need to break down data silos in physical activity data, build trust in data practices, and accelerate data sharing initiatives.
I flagged that there needs to be a more strategic approach to data about physical activity.
Thanks to @whysports.bsky.social for inviting me to speak about data at their Get Active for a Healthier Britain conference yesterday.
I explored how physical activity data could add value in our health system.
I am on a train.
The front unit canโt communicate with the back unit.
So they are TURNING IT OFF AND ON AGAIN (repeatedly).
Excited to be chairing a roundtable discussion today at @tpximpact.comโs Power of Data Conference. Weโll be discussing the National Data Library and what it could and should be.
25.02.2025 07:18 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Today I was delighted to host almost 30 volunteering leaders at @odihq.bsky.social.
We talked about the need for data infrastructure and culture to support and attract volunteers.
There was a huge energy in the room and I look forwards to building on this in the future.
Write-up coming soonโฆ
I helped write a paper about the #NationalDataLibrary you can read a summary and find the paper at the link belowโฆ
04.02.2025 10:39 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Land use modelling no longer needs to be a decadal pursuit, modals can be developed and constantly refined and improved.
Properly stewarding the data and model to open standards, perhaps in a National Data Library, would support this.
The opportunities to make use of the extensive catalogues of geographic and remote sensed data that are now freely and openly available are massive, particularly when combined with responsibly designed AI and ML software.
01.02.2025 12:39 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This is a really important opportunity to shape land use policy in the UK.
I really look forward to seeing how this consultation develops into policy.

Meanwhile in Sheffield I have had 4 conversations with my practice this week 1 with a GP, 1 with a pharmacist and 2 with admins. All I am trying to do is reset my repeat prescriptions!

Fundamentally how does turning online booking reduce workload and enable teams to catch-up? I think the research shows it takes more resource to answer phone calls! If the issue is prioritising appointment issuing could this be done with a digital triage?

One of the best things about Sheffield is its hidden industrial heritage.
Today Iโm inside the Eagle Works office and it is amazing marble, oak, and art.
I helped write an @odihq.bsky.social paper for the @wellcometrust.bsky.social UK National Data Library.

It worrying that it is considered unusual that the PM might want/need/have a team of data analysts and scientists?
These roles are critical in every organisation so why not No.10?
Why havenโt we explained our value-add clearly enough as a profession?
