Maurice Sendak exhibit in Columbus (and a visit to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Research Library) | Chris Schweizer Get more from Chris Schweizer on Patreon

The best art exhibit I've ever had the joy of poring over was a huge, inspiring Sendak exhibit visiting Columbus a few years back; I wrote about it on the Patreon (some pics, too):

You know what's amazing about this illustration? The lady in purple is holding an old school computer printout which just came out around 1953 (and notice how the guy sitting down is clutching a slide ruler) #retrocomputing

To celebrate our 50th anniversary, we're bringing back some of our most beloved comics, including Naughty Bits #1 by Roberta Gregory: originally launched in 1991, it became the longest-running solo alternative comic book series by a female cartoonist--out 5/20! https://ow.ly/VWUr50YmLU4

Meta (Facebook) sadly ruined that app over time, but the day it really died for me is when they killed the square format on the profile page 🌅

A grand dame in a huge elaborate eighteenth century wig smirks flirtatiously behind her fan. The wig is topped with a full rigged ship, adorned with hearts and cupids. A battleship under full sail! The ship’s cannons shoot off a broadside of little pink hearts that fly everywhere. (Watercolor on paper.) A damsel in elaborate golden armor walks on the parapet of a castle. She wears a tall golden helmet with a cascade of pink plumes, and on her breastplate is an ornate golden lock in the shape of a heart. Surely she is armored against Love! But a dastardly masked Cupid, fashionably dressed in black satin, wig, and lace, flies in with bow at the ready, and an arrow in the form of a golden key! Will it fit the lock? It’s a cupcake! It’s a dragon! It’s a cupcake dragon! Made of living frosting, decked with cherries, and curled up neatly atop a cupcake, munching on a cherry. Tiny watercolor of two white kittens with orange tinted ears and tails, playing with a pink ribbon

Happy Valentines Day!

Are these pink enough??

(All watercolor or ink and watercolor)

they were giving these away for free at science fiction cons in the early 80s — and they gave away hardcover copies no less!

• Don’t get into a position where you need permission from someone else to do a creative project (added note: this includes depending on big corporate platforms be it Etsy or YouTube)
• If it makes you happy run towards it

Some little gems Otis shares in this video:
• How did he meet so many cool people? He put himself in the room...
• When doing creative projects don’t try and take giant leaps, just do that one little bitty thing every day

The story goes like this, in 1967 a little girl called Takara’s customer service number, and asked to speak to Licca-chan.

Not wanting to crush a little kid’s dreams, the operator quickly replied “Hello, this is Licca-chan!”

Very cute, totally harmless. …right?

Designs of Miklac, an anthropomorphic, angular young cow wearing shorts, by Lars Fiske. He is seen as the moon pouring a Milky Way out of a carton, drawing a diagram as a pencil while painting a red, wavy line over it with a paintbrush, walking around with milk cartons for shoes, whatever he is doing in the fifth sketch and as a pile of faeces. Cartons of chocolate Skolemelk, featuring Miklac with his classmates at a beach, in a classroom teaching them about recycling and performing winter sports with them in an Alpine setting Cartons of TineMelk featuring the girl from the previous cartons kicking Miklac as a football, cows in tutus, Miklac playing a guitar and singing so loudly that it shocks the milk out of another cow, two fishermen startled by Miklac jumping out as a big fish and Miklac merged with the black spots on another cow while an orange alien cow flies in the background Miklac doodling a Skolemelk carton on the school chalkboard behind the teacher's back as students walk in well-prepared

Miklac
TineMelk
2000-2014

To market their range of milk for schools in Norway, Tine hired Lars Fiske to design a series of quirky, angular characters, led by shapeshifting cow mascot, Miklac. They appeared on cartons of Skolemelk and on school equipment.

Designed 99 years ago (1927), and I'm amazed to see that they're still manufacturing them today: "Otis Brannock played around with the idea for a couple of years and finally built a prototype using an Erector set. In 1926 and 1927, Brannock patented the device and created a company to build it."
