The first @kiel.institute industrial policy lab conference was a great success. Claudia Steinwender and I organised the academic sessions, which were based on the contributions to a special issue of Perspektiven der Wirtschaftspolitik on industrial policy.

We should really be worried when even the FT provides a platform for @michaelpettis.bsky.social crude thoughts on taxing capital flows.

Amazing 8th edition of the Workshop on International Economic Networks ending in Vienna today. We started the day with keynote on quantitative geoeconomics b Isabelle Mejean, followed by a PhD student session (Hiroyuki Asai and Luca Lorenzini) and talks by Agostina Brinatti and Eric Verhoogen.
Nice to see our paper on China’s rare earth export restrictions featured on the NBER website: www.nber.org
Industrial policy can unintentionally spur #innovation abroad. China's export restrictions on rare earth elements led to a surge in innovation & exports in downstream sectors outside #China.

Ein paar Gedanken zur Makroökonomie der Trump Zölle:

Ale Cunat and @zymek.bsky.social show how to correctly compute asymmetric trade barriers in the Review of Economic Studies. One can use their model to explain why Trump's tariffs do not eliminate aggregate imbalances, even if they may reshuffle bilateral ones.

Just tax sales of US based companies at a higher rate (all sales are imported services)
Someone in Trump’s team forgot to add trade in services😬 when including it EU-US trade is roughly balanced
policy.trade.ec.europa.eu/eu-trade-rel....
We argue that trade agreements need to integrate agreements on coordination of domestic policies (regulation, competition policy…) to achieve an effective outcome because shallow agreements lead to inefficient domestic policies.
Very happy to see my paper „Trade and Domestic Policies Under Monopolistic Competition“ finally published in the Economic Journal. Joint work with @alessiacampolmi.bsky.social and Chiara Forlati. Here is a link to the article:

1/ NEW RESEARCH: Our study reveals 46% of pesticides embedded in EU agricultural consumption originate from imports, despite imports constituting only 17% of consumption. This includes substances prohibited in the EU. This regulatory gap fuels leakage effects and hurts EU competitiveness 🧵
Thanks Sebastian!
Thanks, found it :)
