6. Digital Permission and Visa Vignettes
The UK is phasing out physical visa vignettes, moving to a fully digital permission system. Applicants will attend a Visa Application Centre once for identity confirmation, and their passport will be returned immediately
4. Tighter Pathways from Study to Work
The Temporary Shortage List, which allowed sponsorship of certain below-degree-level roles, is set to expire on 31 December 2026. This will further restrict the transition from study to work visas
3. Earned Settlement and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
The qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is being extended from 5 to 10 years for most migrants, with some potentially waiting up to 20 years depending on their circumstances.
2. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Enforcement
Starting 25 February 2026, non-visa nationals must obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK. The ETA costs Β£16 and is valid for two years or until the passport expires.
