I was raised from birth to know that racism is wrong and all of my family hated white supremacists and the KKK. That’s not to say they had a perfect understanding of racism, but they never endorsed overt racism.

My father grew up in rural Appalachia and the county schools were desegregated when he was seventh grade. Both of his parents (white mom, Cherokee dad) made it clear that he and his siblings were to be friendly with the Black kids, and they would be punished if they were involved in racist bullying.
