Jetzt ist Stille
der Rest der Strecke,
ohne Erinnerung
kein Leben.
Ich hör meine Schritte
nicht länger,
was mich umringt,
ist verborgen.
Blind lauf ich weiter, ein fahler Hund
in der Kälte. Hier muss es sein,
hier nehme ich Abschied von mir selbst
und werde dann langsam
niemand.

Just heard that Alex Wheatle has died. He was such a fantastic writer, who captured the intensity, the passion, the humour and the tragedy of life as an Black teen, in contemporary Britain and in times past. Steve McQueen's Small Axe episode four tells his story: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...
🖤 Rest in peace, Rest in power, sharing love and condolences with all family and friends, all of our writing family and community and all students of the mighty Alex Wheatle. What a loss. Thank you Alex.
On this day in 1984, the Ethiopian writer Baalu Girma vanished, almost certainly kidnapped & murdered by the Derg regime in retaliation for his novel Oromay. The brutal regime’s attempt to silence him failed, as Oromay is a beloved & popular classic. Thank you Ato Baalu. We remember.

Amharic fiction coming in 2025 ! Baalu Girma's 'Oromay' coming from Soho Press in the US www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/768953... and MacLehose in the UK www.hachette.co.uk/titles/baalu... 2/2025. This is fantastic ! (Basically nothing gets translated from Amharic, so this is big, big news.)
