Huge thank you to Omaha Performing Arts for the invitation to see Hamilton last night! It was my first time ever seeing the show and I enjoyed it!

ASL interpreters were acquired. There will be an ASL day of sorts where they will have interpreters already for the 2pm show this Saturday.

Happy National ASL Day. I finally got someone locally to listen to me at all about accessibility in grassroots. 🎉

The world is on fire and we just don't have the energy to deal with even more of it. What's the point?

I’mma let you think about that for one second, okay? Yeah, most of us already don’t go because they are inaccessible. We already are not supporting them. That’s what we’re trying to fix. It’s just all the activism and the inaccessibility of it all in general.

“Well, why don’t you just not support these protests, these ableist protests, because they’re not accessible?”

One of my favorite things about this past weekend, when talking about the lack of accessibility in politics and activism, both offline and online, at rallies, in content, anything… is somebody said,

No more of this, “You need to be playing a role!” We have been. It only goes so far when the people who are higher than you won’t listen to you.

And please stop ignoring us, that we exist, and that we have people trying to take away our rights too and we cannot be the only ones talking about it. We need support to get the word out there. We need our own politicians supporting us.

Videos need to be captioned and transcribed. ALT Text. Image descriptions. Hell, wear a damn mask too (if you can) with all the gross illnesses mocking about.

“The same time they’re contemplating on what they’re gonna use as a sound system is the same time they need to be calling agencies and getting an ASL interpreter. All that sound equipment has to be reserved ahead of time. The same goes for an interpreter.”

Omaha, share this. Everyone, share this. We are tired of fighting alone and cannot keep doing it alone. Please and thank you.

Make your content accessible. That part you CAN control. Let us have the same access your non-disabled citizens do.

Include disabled people in your activism. Make your content, events, etc. accessible. Sometimes you can’t have accessibility at events because of an interpreter shortage, etc. but you know what you can do to get our votes?

Did I move myself right in front of them and hold my sign up the whole time in hopes that they’ll think about it in the future? Oh yes.

Were there ASL interpreters at #HandsOff? No. Not for lack of trying, but frustrating nonetheless. Were deaf and disabled people mentioned at all when speakers and posters talked about issues? Also no. Except for a one time tiny, small mention of special needs children, no.
