9 years ago, no prize money, but my poem on a bus in Guernsey. My cousin lives in Guernsey and read my poem for me at the Poems on the Move prize ceremony. My grandad was once a bus conductor who read poetry to his kids. If I peaked with this so be it. 🥰

London Weekend

This city makes me greedy;
greedy to be thirty-five again
and well established
in its Barbican.
I walk and my senses prickle,
I want to consume it - all of it,
want to be everyone’s lover;
even the roar of traffic is a song -

until I see him: bags bunched
into a makeshift nest,
blanket pulled against the cold,
head dropped on chest,
hands clutching, even in sleep,
their cardboard message.

I drop the price of a hot drink
in his empty lap, draw close my coat
against the sudden chill.

So I am thinking this is the little poem I want to give you today. Hope you like it. #poetry.

A rectangular piece of broken china - a blue old-fashioned rose on white, with leaves just as blue. It's embedded in grey stony concrete. A broken chunk of china - a rhombus with a curved long side, probably the edge of a saucer. It has a blue outer band, and delicate blue and gold botanical stem & flower pattern dancing like old fountain penmanship. It's embedded in stony grey concrete. A piece of colourful china, not quite oblong, with green leaves, and red-pink and blue-yellow peonies. It's embedded in stony grey concrete with gold lichen, the edges of solid blue china shards similarly embedded just seen to either side. A section of broken white china with slightly wiggly edges. It has a delicate greyish pattern, slightly deco - central lines crossed over a circle, a scrollish border in a stylised flower shape. It's embedded in grey stony concrete, the edges of similar shards just seen around it.

"Thin" from 'Consolamentum' (@blackboughpoetry.bsky.social) by @jamesmcconachie1.bsky.social. A collection which I had the joy of previewing & providing a testimony for.

Beautiful elegiac poems exploring a breathtaking historical landscape against the tenor of humanity 🔥

A place for every Storm ⚡️

The Horse who Died in Thomas Street is a poem by Séamus ua Trodd featured in The Storms issue 4.
Minutes after leaving Thomas street last Sunday, I found quite a few horses, all still alive & kicking, inhaling the Guinness air

I once landed in workshop w/ Sophie Cabot Black, who’d quote Stanley Kunitz, saying the line must read as a cohesive thought, standing on its own. I guess that is always in my mind at editing stage. Not saying we need to follow rules or advice every time tho. Thanks! I like craft discussions :)

A candle with three wicks, all alight. Its edge, picked opaque with light, is a green wax leaf with distinct veins, as if the whole is wrapped in foliage. The centre with the wicks is pale orange. To the right of the candle is laid a deep red rose. Strong shadows lend this picture solemnity and quiet.

Here in Aotearoa it's Trans Day Of Remembrance.

Every year, we light the candle Cate was gifted in Thailand, pour love & memory into the flicker & smoke, let it reach the dead. And we cry. This year, in the current shadow, more than ever.

Friends, how we love you. Stay with us, any way you can.
