Lying in bed this morning I convinced myself I had a proof that structure is the unit of inheritance not dna sequence. I expect this feeling to wear off by mid day and it will join that scrap heap of ideas that only seemed good in the shower or when half asleep.

The whittakers peanut slab is the best way to eat chocolate. If you ever get down to NZ they’re pretty much everywhere.

The speed difference is an issue an escort has to take special attention to, especially long distance navigation and currents. 500 m is a big deal to swimmer and half a knot current likewise. I enjoy the precise navigation aspect.

Used to do a few long distance swimmer escorts in my kayak. Always tried to finish with more or less the same number of people I started with.

Sometimes you’re just looking for an expression to describe a phenomenon. β€œLatent variation” is what I need to describe the potential variation produced by newly acquired neutrality. It’s like latent heat. Next you find there’s already an expression that you’ve never heard off.

I’m thinking of playing around with water ballast in the ama. Probably around 20 litres. The downside is I’d have to add 20 litres to the volume of the ama.

I think overall it’s a nice idea. It’s probably overpowered. That just adds complexity and cost with rapidly diminishing returns. With that hull, a postage stamp would push it along nicely.

I might still play with it as with my tiny sail the ama has never left the water.

I was looking at moving the mass closer to the Waka. This is a peculiarity of the sitting position in my boat (feet forward). From what I can see the Bruce foils main issue is coming out of waves and your righting moment disappears when it’s upwind. With predictable results.

Saw it years ago and was discussing it with Gary the other day. A angled foil would get its AoA from slippage but I’d be a bit worried about it popping out, so I was curious about your experiences

14.07.2025 08:59 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

@dominictarr.bsky.social have you played around with angling the foil on the ama inwards so that it gives some downforce. The slippage should give it some AoA perhaps enough for a downforce component. Toying with the idea.

I’ve seen so many iterations of the smart home idea going back to the apple 2 in the 70s. It’s an idea that seems to pop up every so often and seems to die just a quickly. No idea why.
