My thanks for Rodrigo for the invite! Originally from Recife, he worked w. Naná Vasconcelos for 5 years & told me some good stories about him last night.
04.03.2026 18:01 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Round midnight in a soundproof studio in downtown São Paulo last night listening to “Fascination Street” on a set of high-end speakers. Producer Rodrigo Coehlo used a laser pointer to measure that my 👂s were perfectly aligned in the ideal spot. Sounded immaculate despite this shitty video evidence.

Hung out with a friend in São Paulo this weekend & he referred to my research of the music scene here as “gonzo” 😜

a few years back Mark Helias quietly released this 1987 live recording w. Ward, Cherry, Ed Blackwell, & Naná Vasconcelos

“For those interested in the diasporic connections forged among jazz musicians, Ward’s long collaboration with the South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim…comes to mind. Ward connected with Ibrahim through Don Cherry, in their shared admiration for John Coltrane, in whose band Ward also played”

Party music for sure. i'm not much of a big band guy, unless it sounds like this!
02.03.2026 22:17 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0on the flip side of this comp is the extended version of Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin "De I Comahlee Ah." A barn burner. It was too long to fit on their 1976 album 'Antiquity' so they had to cut ~40 secs to make it fit there (i lucked out finding that LP in a thrift store for a few bucks)
