I've actually enjoyed the new energy in Yerba Buena with the concerts and food trucks. But putting barricades up *after* the lunch content has concluded is super weird

A GDC slide about the 87 percent game preservation study. Which I wrote! And it's not my slide!

Sorry, people were taking it out of the context of the panel I just didn't want to keep fueling discussion that was missing the rest of the panel. I'll reopen it because I'm glad it was starting conversations!

Right? I saw someone say that this was just GOG's audience self-selecting, but it's an interesting and notable outlier from their usual audience!

This year's IGF student award winners told me they were influenced by Cookie's Bustle. This is why we do it, folks. Holy shit #GDC2026

Yeah in whatever this case was (I assume not NOLF), he said they were able to dig up the contracts, but whoever wrote them made a mistake in the language that accidentally permanently assigned the rights away 😬😬😬

Interesting observation from Larry Kuperman: The audiences for original re-releases vs. remakes are different! There can be justification for both! (making notes for future copyright advocacy purposes) #GDC2026

The stark contrast between NES/Atari Dads and the hordes of pastel-haired queer kids at every retrogaming convention is always interesting to observe

"Who are the right external partners for preservation - and how do you build trust while managing IP sensitivity and authenticity?"

Extremely happy to see these questions being asked from the *industry* side. This is how we start to build industry-community trust #GDC2026

He also suggested that Heroes III is having a bit of a moment with younger influencers, so that could be part of the surge for that particular game

"How can companies better collaborate with existing fan communities and cultural institutions to preserve and revitalize classic IP?"

Garrett: "This is probably the #1 question we get. [...] We have proven over the years that we [the industry] suck at preserving games." The solution: devs/publishers should listen more to what the community is doing! #GDC2026

A bunch of metadata fields related to Ratchet and Clank.

Internal PlayStation tool called MetaGen for organizing game development artifact metadata, for reference within their studios without having to share 100s of GBs of files. They're exploring open-sourcing this tool! #GDC2026

"How can the industry address legal barriers - like expired licenses or outdated contracts - that block re-releases or remasters?"

"You will not believe how many games are not available because of a simple mistake [with rights agreements]."

GOG gives an example of an unnamed game that can't get re-released because of a mistake in the publishing contract 🫠 #GDC2026
