I was looking at published grant reviewer lists for a study section, and found myself listed as reviewer at a study section that I had not attended or been asked to attend.

Now I wonder how many rosters list me ,and how many PIs are mad at me for grant reviews at meetings I had nothing to do with…

But unfortunately this isn’t all happy news. Due to the NSF budget request & associated mandated forward funding, my budget was cut by a whopping 41%.

TBH, that was a pretty devastating blow as a junior faculty at an under resourced university. It meant cutting opportunities for nearly 10 people.

New paper:
More than 2700 human 3′UTRs are highly conserved. These 3′UTRs are essential components in mRNA templates, as their deletion decreases protein activity without changing protein abundance. Highly conserved 3′UTRs help the folding of proteins with long IDRs.

Advice distilled from an NSF PO:

Apply for NSF funding this year. Because NSF's current policy is to forward-fund active projects (e.g. pay down their mortgage on the future years of funding), there are plausible budget scenarios where NSF has a LARGE budge to spend next fiscal year (on your grant)

Private funder HHMI pauses postdoc fellowship As HHMI pauses Hanna Gray fellowship applications, opportunities for young scientists shrink further, making them look overseas.

I spoke with @aniloza.bsky.social at STAT today about HHMI's decision not to fund this round of Hanna Gray applicants.

(c) Discriminatory prohibited boycott means refusing to deal, cutting commercial relations, or otherwise limiting commercial relations specifically with Israeli companies or with companies doing business in or with Israel or authorized by, licensed by, or organized under the laws of Israel to do business. It's a demoralizing time to be a US scientist but that is part of their strategy. My friend Jeff Dangl just emailed our faculty reminding us that NSF and NIH grant review panels are still being held and staff there want us to keep submitting. Stay engaged and keep fighting! 1/n

All 4 of my NIH research grants are terminated. These were grants on MDR-TB treatment & strategies for supporting adolescents living w/ HIV. This is a massive waste of resources. I am heartbroken for my Harvard team, my partners in Peru, the next generation of scientists & our country. Shame.

Has anyone on here recently used or had contact with Keyclone (a mutagenesis/cloning company run by Jun Yang)? We've used them for 12+ years but have recently experienced radio silence and want to make sure everything's ok...
