Taken in 2023 at Wolf Watch UK where I’ve been a volunteer member of staff for 7 years. Bosch was raised as a pet before being handed into the centre and I met him when he was just a year old.

If they were super small you probably had a dwarf species of hamster! I’m sure your guys had a better set up than most during that time (my childhood hamster had an awfully small cage) but by today’s standard a Habitrail is still considered unethical

I heard that a lot from floor staff, that they got into the job because they love animals and genuinely care about them but corporate is a nightmare. You can only do so much

Yes exactly! I trusted the pet shop, I had had as a kid and assumed it was the same!

Hamsters also need a wheel where their back doesn’t bend (their spine is straight so they don’t injure themselves) and usually this means at least a 12 inch wheel for a Syrian hamster. I don’t believe the Habitrail kits accommodate for that

The general consensus is that a hamster needs 100 cm of continuous floor space at least. This is because they are burrowing animals and like to make their own nests! The Habitrail kits are not great because hamsters can get stuck in the tubes and they’re hard to clean

It does my head in! The thought that an animal can spend its entire life in a shoebox sized cage even today breaks my heart

I don’t like bullying and I see it so much on the hamster groups I’m in. Some people even getting death threats which is absurd!! We can be kind to people and offer resources instead, the majority want the best for their animals

I’ve said it many times before but I’ve been duped by pet shops and when I showed the internet my first hamster I got YELLED at. Most people were not at all kind which made me defensive. I loved this animal and didn’t like being accused of neglect but after my own research I found they were right

Same here! I loved that hamster but she had an awful tiny cage.

Every time a stranger online shows me a photo of their hamsters there’s about a 10% chance that their cage meets an ethical standard. Often not their fault though, the pet shops don’t give a fuck and sell us these tiny awful cages with sawdust and all other things which are so harmful/dangerous

Their lifespan is short and they are very good at multiplying!

This cage is just fine for Odin who is low maintenance and is very happy just being on his wheel all night with little outings to the play pen. Female Syrians tend to be much higher energy as they go into heat every 4 days which makes them horny little crackheads. They tend to suit a larger cage

They do! Hamsters can clean themselves using sand! The sand should be all natural dust free sand and Odin likes to use his as a toilet!

Speed clean!!! Odin is in a 100x50x50 cage which is the ethical minimum for a hamster. He was adopted in November from the Cheltenham Animal shelter and he’s settled in beautifully
