I would never go out of my way to harass anyone who is into something I am not, regardless of how questionable it is. When I see people demand abuse glorifying art be unequivocally accepted, though, I see massive oversimplification of a complex issue.

That said, the idea that all kinks/fetishes are equally unquestionable when paraphilias exist ad infinitum makes no sense to me. Attraction to feet, as a common example, is not the same as attraction to suffering and torture. Even if it's all fiction, I don't see how they are comparable.

It's like when people say art can be apolitical, when that's simply untrue.

I'm not out here calling for the criminalization of thoughts and fiction, for the same reasons you describe: it's not concrete proof of anything a person has done in reality, nor should it be treated as such. God, no.

If fiction had no impact on reality whatsoever, there would be no point in discussing it in the first place. Why do so if it means nothing? If it says nothing? Media analysis would have little reason to exist if art, its creators, and its consumers didn't stand for anything.

I said that people getting off to violent porn raises a big red flag. Personally, yes, I am very unsettled by it, maybe more then others, but even I didn't say it makes someone inherently dangerous irl. Unless I'm mistaken, at no point did I say that I think getting turned on by violence or abuse in fiction is the same as in reality. I don't think they are equivalent by any stretch, but the latter being worse doesn't mean the former is irrelevant when discussing how a person thinks and views things

...and they found themselves aroused by the glorified sexual abuse, I think that would convey something unsettling about them. While I'm open to a conversation about it, as I'm having in a different sense right now, I don't know why I'm supposed to act like that doesn't say something about a person.

However, just as I talked of criticism being essential to art, especially when seriously dealing with delicate subjects like abuse, I think one's reaction to that art can say something about them. Just as with the (sort of absurd) GTA example, if my friend and I watched that hypothetical movie...

Interesting... bc where you see a difference, I still don't disagree with what I originally said. There is a difference between enjoying something sexually or not, both in fiction and reality. You argued that not all sexual content is meant to be arousing, and I agree.

The last thing I want is for art and to be censored, especially systematically, but I am against the idea that all art is infallible bc the artist hasn't done anything in reality. Kanye has said awful things in his songs, and backlash to that isn't stifling his free speech, it's others' in action.

For example, I'm not against a film depicting sexual assault, but if that film portrays it as something to be desired or otherwise frames it (literally or figuratively) in a glorifying manner, I think the writers, directors, etc. would be rightly criticized for their decisions.
