EXHAUSTING THINGS THAT LEAD TO MEDICAL BURNOUT" featuring a colorful wheel chart. Each slice of the wheel has an arrow pointing to a specific challenge faced by those with chronic illness.

Starting from the top and moving clockwise, the text descriptions are:

Spending hours on the phone making appointments, getting referrals, or handling insurance.

Your body paying the price for having fun.

    Accruing medical debt.

Repeatedly having to explain your condition to those who question it (including medical professionals).

    Keeping organized with multiple specialists.

Loss of trust in medical professionals from prior gaslighting or medical trauma.

Keeping track of prescriptions and supplements.

Fighting for a diagnosis or answers to a diagnosis.

Constantly having to advocate for your health.

Reminder to everyone that "your best" doesn't mean pushing yourself to your breaking point. "Your best" means the best you can do while being the best you. Get enough sleep, give yourself breaks, listen to your limits. "Your best" is better when you're happy and healthy.

Step 2.5: pretend you're fine so nobody asks follow up questions.

@ADHDExplained - highly sensitive to anything that suggests i didn't try hard enough. you have no idea how much effort i put in to EVERYTHING. Just because my effort + output doesn't always seem equal to others, they have no idea how much i have to force my brain in to action

@j_fychan - Absolutely! My partner is chronically ill and can’t read books, audiobooks are all they have really. I made them a real-size 2D bookshelf to keep track of books they’ve read since we moved home, The midnight library by @matthaig1 going up next, once I can find & print the spine 🤞

below the text are two photos. The left photo shows a white wall with four thin, horizontal wooden strips acting as "shelves," with a few printed 2D book spines and a small red dragon cutout on the top shelf. The right photo is a close-up of the "bookshelf," showing realistic, life-sized printouts of book spines—including titles like The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman—pasted onto the wall to look like a physical collection of books.

This is so heartwarming

theunitofcaring

saying "you are a burden on society" is just such a weird framing of priorities

It's like saying "wow, think how much better gas mileage your car would get if you weren't sitting in it" or "think how dry that umbrella would be if you weren't holding it in between you and the rainstorm".

the things we create? they're for us. they are meant to carry us. they are meant to protect us. we are meant to hold them up to keep us dry.

queeranarchism

why do we even have a society if not to take care of each other?
