Statelessness, watercolours and ink: Zahra Marwan Zahra Marwan is the winner of last year’s UN International Art Contest: Minority Artists Working on Statelessness Themes. She was born to a Kuwaiti mother and a stateless father and she identifies as a member of the Ayam minority in Kuwait. Working as a traditional artist with watercolour and ink, Zahra creates work that reflects her cultural roots in Kuwait as well as her life now in Albuquerque, New Mexico (United States of America). She loves poetry and independent cinema and how quiet and mysterious the night is. She is deeply fond of the sea. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico in Languages and Literature, with a minor in Flamenco Dance and History as well as a minor in Philosophy. She has loved working with museums, non-profits, theatre companies and cultural centres and has found making picture books to be dreamier than she had dreamed them to be! Her debut picture book ‘Where Butterflies Fill the Sky’ was published by Bloomsbury Books in 2022 and named one of the New York Times / New York Public Library Best Illustrated books as well as NPR’s Best Books of 2022.

How South Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan are reclaiming their identity in South Sudan | UNHCR Africa In 2016, deadly conflict reached Wau town, north-western South Sudan, where 49-year-old pharmacist Michael Angelo Ufo and his family had called home for years, forcing them to flee to White Nile State in Sudan to save their lives. But a few years later, Ufo and his family had to relive these memories when renewed conflict erupted in Sudan in April 2023.

UNHCR supported 31,010 South Sudanese returnees from Sudan to establish identity documentation and nationality certification in 2023-25 - good but a small % of the total I imagine #legalidentity www.unhcr.org/africa/news/...

Poland reported the arrest of a Belarusian "thief-in-law". But it's unclear what to do with him next

New concept to me: status of 'thief-in-law' -- leaders of organised crime groups from former Soviet Union countries -- and citizenship deprivation possible for those who have this status, rendering them stateless & unreturnable from another country nashaniva.com/en/390035

In this current harsh world, let's warm a few hearts remembering the events of 7-8 March 1991, when the 90,000 people of Brindisi woke up to find 25,000 Albanians roaming the streets of their town. For perspective, that's roughly equivalent to 25k people suddenly landing in Hastings [Thread] >> 1

This just isn't true. The 1951 convention requires state parties to facilitate the integration and naturalisation of refugees because the people who drafted it weren't moral vacuums or stupid enough to think that persecution that made people flee for their lives would magically go away in a year.
