@globalcit.bsky.social report summarising recent citizenship law developments in 12 Eastern European EU member & candidate states shows how citizenship policy is increasingly shaped by security concerns, particularly in response to Russiaβs full-scale invasion of Ukraine hdl.handle.net/1814/94610

In this current harsh world, let's warm a few hearts remembering the events of 7-8 March 1991, when the 90,000 people of Brindisi woke up to find 25,000 Albanians roaming the streets of their town. For perspective, that's roughly equivalent to 25k people suddenly landing in Hastings [Thread] >> 1

This just isn't true. The 1951 convention requires state parties to facilitate the integration and naturalisation of refugees because the people who drafted it weren't moral vacuums or stupid enough to think that persecution that made people flee for their lives would magically go away in a year.

What is more important, democratisation or ethnographic security? Through the case of #Abkhazia, I argue that the latter will have a higher salience in places with contested nation- and state-building projects.

Kansas requires IDs to vote, but 1,700 trans residents just had their IDs revoked
Kansas has required people to show proof of identification in order to vote since 2012. A new law threatens that ability for 1,700 residents.
The state turns IDs off to revoke fundamental rights and access. Essential services and rights -once freely available- are increasingly being made conditional on digital IDs: banking, driving, voting, mobile communication, university, hospitals. Then the state turns IDs off.

Today, weβre writing to the Prime Minister, calling on the UK Government to abolish citizenship stripping.
Using these extreme powers, the Home Secretary can deprive some British citizens of legal rights simply by saying it is 'conducive to the public good' to do so.
