The real boogeyman is us. We made it hard and expensive (even impossible) to build housing of all types but especially homes for “those” people—folks of moderate to lower means. Fixing it will take much more than keeping bit players out of the market.
If you make a ladder that's missing the top rungs, people will stop further down.
Yes, this is a housing post

Yesterday, Oregon's legislature voted to ban underfunded inclusionary zoning from the Portland metro area.
It's a big turnaround, and I hope a path forward for other states too.

Too bad this good article is marred by such a bad headline.
Fixed it:
To Cut Housing Costs, Some States Are Reforming Fire Safety Rules That Don't Make Buildings Safer
For the record, WA was the first state to pass single-stair legislation, but is now lagging other states in implementation.
Today, the House passed SB 1567 to establish a $20m Construction Revolving Loan Fund to provide subsidized loans to build mixed-income housing.
The House also just passed SB 1521 to create more flexibility and greater guardrails for Inclusionary Zoning programs.

"You might think that our rules about elevators would help wheelchair users, but they can inadvertently achieve the opposite: overkill in elevator code kills elevators."

Up here it’s called the Cascade Curtain. It’s a common sight just west of us. Yesterday, however, someone left it open.

Sunriver, BBR and The Tree Farm are all front running candidates.
Yesterday I signed two ordinances sponsored by CM Lin that eliminate out of date regulatory barriers and speed the permitting process. This will accelerate development timelines by as much as five to twelve months, helping us move more quickly to build the housing and shelter we need.

We're all volunteers here at Central Oregon YIMBY. Seeing how bad the housing shortage is and how many people it hurts is what keeps us motivated.

First time they’ve fallen on the same day in 100’s of years. Our local pancake party parish decided to make it an evening event to pull in all the other celebrants.
@tinakotek.bsky.social has done a lot of great work on housing in Oregon - this is something that is missing here, though
Might even be nice, one day, to consolidate that crazy checkerboard pattern we inherited from the 1800's
We're working on updating from Bend YIMBY to Central Oregon YIMBY. The new name works a lot better for someone from, say, Redmond, Madras or La Pine to turn up at their city council meeting.
We expect there may be a few hiccups, so please bear with us!
For YIMBYs, it’s all about building communities where more people can afford to live, stay, and thrive wherever they choose.
If you want to see more homes, more neighbors, and more opportunity in your backyard, join the movement.
KUOW story includes a quote that explains why @sightline.org has been working on HB 1443 to allow mobile dwellings on house lots:
"It is absolutely by far the least expensive, the easiest, the cheapest, and the quickest form of housing possible in the United States."

Unless you came from the indigenous peoples you are an immigrant or descended from one.
Not sure how many people like her believe the Wall Street excuse or just use it as a boogeyman (much like STRs here). But if we built enough housing the hedge funds wouldn’t be buying any of it.
Lovely. Getting to the point where we finally understand why those in power haven’t spilled the beans. There’s a ton of people we know and who are popular that are in there. It spans most of entertainment, sports and politics. On both sides of the aisle.
Don’t forget overpasses, you get a better view of thumbs and fingers.
