Illinois has made it clear: there is no reason to use the military as political pawns and we will not roll out the red carpet for a wannabe dictator.

The ICE raids taking place in our communities and the deployment of the National Guard to Chicago are not at all about public safety. They are about political theater.

We will not let Trump get away with this. Not in Chicago. Not anywhere. Not now. Not ever.

President Trump calling up 300 Illinois National Guard ‘immediately’ to protect ICE, buildings for 60 days In a memo obtained by the Tribune, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Illinois National Guard leadership up to 300 members will be called into service “effective immediately.”

This is a brazen and authoritarian violation of our state sovereignty. It is an attempt to bully and intimidate Illinoisans. There is no need for military troops on the ground in Illinois.

Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Chicago is an abuse of power that undermines our democracy.

I joined @durbin.senate.gov, @duckworth.senate.gov, and Democratic members of the IL delegation to demand Trump immediately rescind his order to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago.

Trump ordering National Guard troops into Illinois is a dangerous, authoritarian move meant to threaten us for being a welcoming state. We will not be intimidated. The only emergency crisis in Chicago is Trump’s invasion and assault on our communities.
