I think the best magic systems always have a cost. Blood or body for power. Memories for untapped knowledge. Years of life for a single wish. The best "spells" are never free.

Anything given too easily is never worth the price, whether that is mortally based or morality based.

Perhaps grimdark has grown as much as it has because the world has become more cynical and hope feels foolish at times.

Many people are living in perpetual shitty situations, and I think relateability plays a factor.

Additionally, I tend to find characters in grimdark books have more depth.
