this framing of the narrative is very misleading.

“…peaceful independence movement, whose only “crime” is to raise a political proposal…”

it was hardly peaceful. rioting and looting all over barcelona. they also held illegal referendum and opened illegal polling stations in public schools and spend millions on propaganda.
