Took a break from social media over the summer- but back sharing a few thoughts on clean nation-building with @bloomberg.com 👇
Policy, politics, media, climate... yes please! Thanks to SFU for hosting tomorrow's panel on "Canada’s Election and the Trump Effect: Prioritizing Climate Change in News Media"
Register for tomorrow's talk with @kamyar-razavi.bsky.social, Morgan Krakow and I here: www.sfu.ca/ceri/events/...
What can I say, @tvotoday.bsky.social's conversation about the Future of Oil made my jaw drop - you can hear the rest at 8/11pm on TVO.
🇨🇦📈 "With global clean energy investment exceeding 2 trillion last year—over $750 billion of which went to electrified transport—the prize is too big to lose," writes Clean Energy Canada's @racheldoran.bsky.social and @joannakyriazis.bsky.social.

We've been doing a lot of thinking about the next frontier of the energy transition in Canada -- here's our take on why "Empowering Households" is a lynchpin to 2030. Eager for your take....

The results from BloombergNEF's 2024 lithium-ion battery price survey are out. Lithium-ion battery pack prices dropped 20% from 2023 to a record low of $115 per kilowatt-hour. This is the largest decline observed in our survey since 2017. 🧵⬇️
Less money spent on energy bills = more money for books, technology and teaching.
See how our funding for heat pumps, insulation and solar panels could help schools across London move away from fossil fuels and save money.
Great to see B.C. going in on wind power in a big way-- and with almost all projects announced having over a 50% equity stake by First Nations: news.gov.bc.ca/releases/202...

The United States is now producing enough domestic solar to cover nearly all annual deployment. That's what policy can do, folks! And a majority of these jobs are in Republican districts.
STRIKING NEW DATA: More than a quarter of new cars sold in the UK in November were battery EVs (so much for "stalling sales")
📈BEV sales up 51% year-on-year
📉Petrol sales down 35% year-on-year (!)
Data from New Automotive
In Spain, the “government has approved “paid climate leave” of up to 4 days to allow workers to avoid travelling during weather emergencies, a month after floods killed at least 224 people… The new measure aims to “regulate in accordance with the climate emergency” so that “no worker must run risks”
“Can the grid handle all those electric cars?”—> “Why have we been wasting 40% of the energy we use on inefficient technologies?”
Electric cars= 3x more efficiency than internal combustion engine.
Not to suggest change is easy but electric future=efficient future.

We all need to become eco-populists. That means championing policies that significantly lower daily costs while lowering emissions. Heat Pumps for All, alongside much more robust tenant rights; free and better public transit; price caps on green energy; make polluters pay for the transition.

I always thought that industry had limited electrification potential.
How wrong I was:
Once we looked into it in more detail we found that the potential for industrial electrification is huge.
90% of industrial process heat could be electrified in Europe by 2035.
Thanks for the opportunity @markhamhislop.bsky.social to push a bit of optimism on the energy transition in a challenging time. You're now officially my first post. Hello #bluesky.
Will Trump roll back Biden’s clean energy industrial policies?
My interview with Rachel Doran, VP of policy and strategy for Clean Energy Canada.
