There is a gathering of great blue herons all around the rookery in the trees across a pretty big pond. This lone heron was off on its own so I could actually get a photo.

She was in the tree alone (after the crows stopped harassing her) then she called out and in flew her friend. They made actual musical conversation with each other. Is this courtship? It was a stunning treat on our walk. #baldeagles #birds #Portland

Yes, they do blend in well!

We know they are there but this is only the second time since we have been going to this wetland (started during the pandemic) that we have seen one and the first time was not out in the open. They seem to like it when humans are NOT around.

Yes. It was standing perfectly still and I was trying to get a little closer (we were the only humans at the wetlands due to high water road closures and I think he expected no interruptions!)

#birds #wetlands The usually shy northern bittern was very much out and about, probably not expecting human visitors on the wetland trail. The road to the wetlands was a river but we walked around and were the only humans on the trail.
