While it doesn't fully solve your problem, I ended up running a monte carlo simulation in a unit sphere instead of unit cube, and got a very interesting result.

Running 10mil trials, I got an average of 0.749914.

Not sure *why* the average appears to be 3/4 of the radius, still looking into that.

Actually it would be less than 1 for a unit sphere.

For any given point, if you take the two opposite rays that span the diameter, they average to 1. However, for any other chord in the sphere it's going to be less than that

I would expect it to be 1 if it were a unit sphere, but a unit cube adds complications.
