So like I get that, but I figured they'd still carry the name on. Like, I assumed that, despite this fact, they'd still continue using the name as a role/title for certain spies like MI6 does other names. Sure they wrote themselves into a corner but I've seen worse retcons that paid off.

... Isn't "Bond" just an alias that a spy takes on as a part of their 007 status. Wth am I missing? Wouldn't MI6 have a short list of replacements to finish any job the current Bond doesn't finish?
