Ha, well that's fair. I moved to post its as using notebooks I was writing too much. Anyway, 25 years of this and I still haven't figured out my preferred system haha

I have taken to sticking post-it notes on the book and writing on them, but I just keep adding more. Very restrained to keep it to one index card!

If you know what library/libraries in your field have excellent and thorough collections their catalogues can be a good way of finding what is out there, then can hone in on tracking down relevant articles via open repositories

I keep yelling 'most papers have an outline already, written by the authors!'

No bots about it, government can't even identify if an FoI request is AI-generated | Region Canberra Federal Government officials have admitted they can’t identify Freedom of Information requests from artificial intelligence bots, or even if they…

Where’s the evidence for why these changes to create more secrecy and less transparency are supposedly needed?

Public service can’t point to any.

This is a terrible bill that should die an early death in the parliament.

Headline from The Art Newspaper that reads: 'Victoria & Albert Museum to expand Gilbert Galleries to explore looting and provenance'

Headline from The Art Newspaper that reads: 'Victoria & Albert Museum to expand Gilbert Galleries to explore looting and provenance'

I read this too quickly and just assumed they were expanding the galleries so they could go and do some more looting πŸ˜‚

Who would have thought there would be a more annoying writing 'tool' than the paperclip, yet here we are...

So annoying. It hates nuance, it's desperately trying to get rid of all the 'in this particular case' from my current book chapter.

Hard to ever get excited about upcoming NGV exhibitions, just announced Cartier, of which there was an exhibition about in Aus about 7 years ago anyway. All the exhibitions seem like prepackaged commercial entities, not much curatorial creativity. Yawn

This seems like a suitable alternative to quite a few world leaders at the moment.

Why indeed, and the mismanagement around using international students caps to placate anti-immigration racists

Yes it's really hard, there are the big things that support (like proper pay, funds for travel etc) but also little things that don't seem obvious, like being able to take part in seminars, staff meetings, being around for informal chats, etc etc

Yes it's super hard, also harder to set goals as you don't know what research work would be most strategic to focus on.

Haven't they recently started a Public Humanities Initiative at unimelb? Baffling that Meanjin isn't seen as a strong part of something like that.

Does anyone know of anything written about why citation metrics are often not great for humanities? It's kind of accepted as a given, especially for some book-focused disciplines, but curious if anyone has done any explicit digging into it, checking data etc?

for academic authors wondering if they're part of this class I found this useful. FWIW not all academic publishers file US copyright, even big publishers. Of my books (all UK-based pubs including camb U press, Manch U Press, etc) only one (Bloomsbury Academic) registered US copyright

T&F did pass on some royalties (they didn't ask whether we wanted to first though) but how they calculate them I have no idea, if these companies are rolling in billions of start up capital, a few thousand dollars passed back is not worth it

I wonder about this a lot, marketing hype and tech culture are part of it, a general alignment of tech/science progress with innovation, rise of the idea that tech is an end in itself and not a tool/means to an end?

27.08.2025 23:28 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I spoke to a T&F rep re our discipline journal and the response was so half hearted. There is no option to opt out which is a huge issue, especially when we publish so many First Nations writers, precariously employed etc.
