In their introduction to these papers, Seager and Stanbridge draw attention to Montagu's esteem for her friend, writing on his death in 1772: "I feel the loss of a Person who sincerely loved me, & never lost an opportunity of doing me any service of pleasure."

Although perhaps not a fan of the Geordie accent, Elizabeth Montagu naturally features in this exhibition due to her links to the North throughout her life, and particularly Newcastle through her businesses which can all be seen through her correspondence!
