Romance has certainly come in for more than its share of vitriol, but not here and not now.

He may well be a testy, ungrateful bastard, but I can't speak to anything other than what was said in this now-disjointed thread, in which he specifically said he celebrates and sells romance. I am also happy to sell romance. The OP never said anything bad about romance per se either. Nor did I.

Then can you carefully point out where anyone has said anything negative about romance?

It seems that way only to you. No one in the thread, not the OP, not Brad, not me, has said anything negative about romance. The comments all refer to new stores that stock a very narrow range of wares and follow popular trends.

I read no contempt here for anything but homogeneity. And why focus only on romance genre when cozy cat cafe books also need defending?

The cover of The Hollow Beast by Christophe Bernard, alongside text recommending it as follows: "If you’re in the mood for a comic extravaganza, look no further than this historical epic featuring family drama, homemade hooch, and a hundred years of seething resentment among the residents of small-town maritime Quebec. It all begins with (what else?) a dispute about a hockey game, and doesn’t end until it’s wrung more fun from its story than you’d ever expect."

Love Hollow Beast!

A drawing of Leviathan Bookstore, a small red brick building with its name lettered over the door and windows, with a green tree next to it. Atop the structure lolls a massive skeleton of a fanciful prehistoric creature resembling a mastodon with tusk askew and a dorsal fin and tail like a whale. It leans one elbow on the tree while perusing an open book in its "hand."

Honestly, if book curation were a Winter Olympic sport, we’d be Norway.

An infographic advertising a 262nd birthday party for the city of St. Louis, hosted at Clements Bar by Leviathan Bookstore on Monday, February 16, featuring books, excerpts thereof, drinks, and trivia. The image accompanying the text shows a red-tinted photo of an illuminated streetscape from about 125 years ago.

Our fair city is turning 262, so we and our good friends at Clements are throwing a party! There will be themed drink specials all evening, and we’ll be on hand with books, performative excerpts, and city trivia. Our Grand/Cherokee collabs have become quite the popular scene, so don’t miss this one!

From our vantage at the intersection of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, even the title is disturbing.

Noticing that Wikipedia calls the movie a "crime drama," which sure? Like Gravity's Rainbow is a history of rocketry.

While independent bookstores are giving out free whistles, hosting protest sign making events, and donating proceeds to mutual aid, Amazon is *checks notes* providing technology that assists ICE in their terrorizing of communities.

Independent bookstores deserve your support. Amazon does not.

Favorite Fiction of 2025 It's always silly to state definitively what the "best" books of the year are, so I'm simply calling this a list of favorites.

Two of those on our year's best list!

With Holocaust Remembrance Day coming up next week, James (perhaps unwisely) handed me the @leviathanbookstore.bsky.social newsletter reins. (You subscribe, right?)
