A drawing of Leviathan Bookstore, a small red brick building with its name lettered over the door and windows, with a green tree next to it. Atop the structure lolls a massive skeleton of a fanciful prehistoric creature resembling a mastodon with tusk askew and a dorsal fin and tail like a whale. It leans one elbow on the tree while perusing an open book in its "hand."

Honestly, if book curation were a Winter Olympic sport, we’d be Norway.

Our fair city is turning 262, so we and our good friends at Clements are throwing a party! There will be themed drink specials all evening, and we’ll be on hand with books, performative excerpts, and city trivia. Our Grand/Cherokee collabs have become quite the popular scene, so don’t miss this one!

From our vantage at the intersection of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, even the title is disturbing.

Noticing that Wikipedia calls the movie a "crime drama," which sure? Like Gravity's Rainbow is a history of rocketry.

While independent bookstores are giving out free whistles, hosting protest sign making events, and donating proceeds to mutual aid, Amazon is *checks notes* providing technology that assists ICE in their terrorizing of communities.

Independent bookstores deserve your support. Amazon does not.

Favorite Fiction of 2025 It's always silly to state definitively what the "best" books of the year are, so I'm simply calling this a list of favorites.

Two of those on our year's best list!

An Edward Gorey engraving-style illustration of giant veiled polar bear standing upright on ice skates carrying a tray and handing an item from it to a small boy standing on a cliff before him. A banner draped in layers across the gray sky reads, "A Future Unremembered Poet of the Seventeeth Century accepts a Christmas Cookie from the Great Veiled Bear."

Leviathan Bookstore on Instagram: "β€œIt is the eighteenth of November. I have got used to that thought.” That’s the beginning of Solvej Balle’s ON THE CALCULATION OF VOLUME, translated by Barbara Have... In this engaging and thought-provoking novel, Solvej Balle masterfully weaves a story that explores the intricacies of time and memory through the lens of a single day that repeats over and over again...

We shared this on Instagram yesterday, but if On the Calculation of Volume teaches us anything, it's that every day is November 18th.
