thank you for these references. Cheng's is really good, sinological enough, but also very well and clearly written, and intended for a general audience too (published with Le Seuil, a general publishing house outside the narrow sinological scope)

I wasn't clear: I don't think A. Cheng needed to be convinced that translating her book in German was a good idea; I remember being told that M. Lackner, who reads French and knew the book was good, pushed for a German translation (as there wasn't yet a German language history of Chinese thought?)

This is probably due to the (positive and influential) role of Michael Lackner if I remember correctly
