Self-advocates and family-members speak at our event in the European Parliament. 🇷🇴 Elisabeta Moldovan “I want the institutions in Romania to be closed. I want those 16 000 people to live in the community.” 🇭🇺 László Bersce: “We want to live independently as part of the community.” 🇩🇪 Jeanne Nicklas-Faust: “We frequently see young people with complex support needs institutionalised in elderly care homes, because of a lack of housing and support.” 🇮🇪 Tamara Byrne: “Make education inclusive for all!” 🇬🇪 Mariam Berikelashvili: “I am an adult woman who knows what she wants. Nothing is worse than being treated like a child.” 🇮🇸 Jónína Rósa Hjartadóttir: “Make education accessible!”
Lack of data isn’t the main problem. Lack of action is. I spoke at European Parliament’s Employment Committee workshop on independent living. ❗️800,000+ people with intellectual disabilities in institutions ❗️Many adults living with their families and relying on their support.
