Somebody might think they could put together a full collection of formally released work with enough time and money, but then they'd learn about, e.g., this one-off copy of the 1993 tape Transmissions to Horace that has tracks not included on any other known copy. And the owner isn't selling.

Maybe the hotel is bad at messaging and suddenly cares about enforcing rules, but it looks like a typical play to try and get out of a hated contract. I think you're right about why they hate the contract though.

But it's why I think messaging is key. It went from allowing a party con vibe to threatening everyone with be quiet (or else) as their first interaction with guests. I get trying to accommodate diverse con experiences, but everything I've seen has been weirdly hostile.

For what to do about noise and parties, I think there's conflicting interests that can never really be resolved. For dealers and staff, cons are crunch time at work, for others it's a weekend bender. There's not a great path to compromise.

I remember an MFF a few years ago where we had some similar no party handout. A bunch of rodents were hanging out playing video games and watching movies, not even that loud, but got shut down because the staff member roaming the halls didn't like people going in and out of the room.

I can definitely see why a hotel wouldn't want to take on that liability, but with FC at least the change was really badly messaged and I don't think management considered how the "no warnings just eviction" line can be abused or create a culture of fear.
