14" monitor, sitting (at an angle) on a cream desk, blinds behind it (and a plant?). on the monitor is a pixelated image of a large burger a can of pepsi and a strawberry. the burger looks delicious.

Detroitism
What does “ruin porn” tell us about the motor city?

Here’s a good article from 2011; in the late 90s and aughts, Michigan Central, the Packard Plant, the Book Cadillac Hotel, and the Michigan Theater parking garage (from 8 Mile) were probably the most photographed examples of Detroit architecture falling into ruin

• Human Data: NASA maintains that no intercourse has happened on its missions.
However, a 2000 report noted that certain positions are impossible in microgravity, and others would require specialized equipment, such as elastic belts or tunnels.
• Animal Data: Research indicates that while animal embryos can implant in space, they face significant developmental issues, particularly DNA damage from high radiation levels.
• Physiological Challenges: Experts suggest that microgravity causes fluids to shift, potentially making it harder for blood to reach the genitals, while zero gravity could hinder sperm movement.
• Psychological/Social Factors: Long-term missions with small crews could create tension or make finding partners difficult. Research suggests that addressing intimacy is essential for the mental health and morale of long-term space travelers. ®
Current Concerns and Future Needs

Everyone’s thinking about the Super Bowl and I wake up thinking: I wonder how many people have had sex in outer space.

I think it’s time we change the name of the Special Olympics to reflect true respect, inclusion, and empowerment.

Weird and uncanny hinterland has always fascinated me.

Today is Dickens’ 214th birthday. To honour him, here’s my reading of the opening of his masterpiece Great Expectations, where Pip shuttles between innocence and knowledge in the indeterminate marshes between the land and the sea #Dickens

When we see the hazel catkins turn yellow, we know that spring is not far off. The catkins, sometimes called lambs' tails, are a drooping string of small flowerlets that bear only stamens. Each flower produces a large number of pollen grains. These are wafted on the wind, and a few fall on the stigmas of the scarlet female flowers, which are too small to show in this picture. From the meeting of the male and female flowers, nuts grow slowly to ripen in September.
At the base of the nut-sapling, honeysuckle vines are putting out their first, tender green leaves, another sign that spring is coming.
The blackbird has his springtime plumage, and very smart indeed he looks. His wife, who is away building her nest, is brownish, and does not have a yellow bill. The rooks in the elm-tops are beginning to show an interest in their last year's nests, which they will soon be rebuilding. The elm blossoms are beginning to show a purple tint, and will be even brighter coloured by early spring.
On the pasture a flock of green and golden plovers has settled. The green plovers have crested heads, and remain with us all through the year; but the golden plovers take long voyages to far distant lands.
Two swans are swimming on the lake.

C F Tunnicliffe again.
Another stunning illustration from What to Look for in Winter.

In times past, during extreme weather events, the imperial court would turn to one particular shrine.
Kifune-jinja (貴船神社), nestled in the mountains north of Kyōto, is home to the god of rain. Horses were gifted to the shrine in an attempt to alter the weather.

Rozan-ji's red oni carrying a sword and flaming torch. Rozan-ji's green oni carrying an axe. Rozan-ji's oni prepare for their dance. Rozan-ji's red oni carrying a sword and flaming torch.

Although oni are a common sight at Setsubun, Rozan-ji (廬山寺) has an origin story for its own 3 ogres.

When the temple's founder, Ryōgen (良源 912-85), was in training he was bothered by 3 troublesome oni (or spirits, depending on what version of the tale you read).
