I discovered short wave radio around the same time and started listening to Radio Luxembourg (lies, it was UK pirate station), the official Top 40, and it was like opening a magic door. But it also meant waiting months to be able to buy a new album, often paying extortionate prices for imports.

Could be both or neither. So much is related to licensing via H/M, Penney's/Primark and the like. When I see 8 year olds wearing Keith Haring t-shirts, it warms my heart (and hopefully generates coin for his foundation and its school outreach programmes).

I am officially no longer a US citizen. While I find the current regime repugnant, politics isn't a primary driver of this change. Simply put, I'll never live there again, and the US government's intrusive laws increasingly making overseas banking impossible as an ex-patriot (get it? ex patriot?).
