On this day, February 21, 109 years ago in 1916, the Battle of Verdun begins.

After a colossal barrage, the German 5th Army goes into full offensive on the Verdun salient. The French, caught off guard, suffer heavy losses as German forces advance.

The Frommer Stop was a Hungarian pistol from 1912 with springs in the cylinder above the barrel.

Wanting to replicate the Villar Perosa, FÉG converted 2 Stops into machine pistols with extended magazines and fitted them together, upside down, on a mount. It wasn't a success.

Two French soldiers in a model trench with a grenade launcher. Probably in a training or demonstration area at La Ville-aux-Bois (02) SW of Saint-Dizier. One soldier sits or squats behind the weapon, ready to pull a trigger to fire it, another prepares to hand him a bomb or grenade. There is a box full of these bombs by his feet.
This weapon is a « lanceur Guidetti ».

Some users just post the image that they’ve taken from another organisation’s website without giving credit. This account always endeavours to credit the archive that preserves these historical assets.

#OTDiH “In a trench located in the Ville-aux-Bois sector, near the Chemin des Dames in the Aisne, soldiers of an infantry regiment serve a Guidetti grenade launcher, preparing to fire on the German lines.” 8 Feb 1916.

Tank Mark I during trials.

#OTD in 1916 the Big Willie tank was demonstrated to King George V. The monarch was quite impressed by this "Land Ship". With such a powerful sponsor, the Mark I went into battle later that year, changing the face of warfare forever. #tanks #History #WW1 #WWI

"Today during the day and the night it was quiet, no noise. At times its hard to believe there is a war going on. The days are endless, which is the reason why we work, to try and forget our fate... The weather is again poor, when will it stop? its sleeting today..."

Worth noting the artist has given the German soldiers the appearances of Hindenburg and Ludendorff.
