It's difficult to overstate how infectious measles is. The reason we (used to?) require measles vaccination is because herd immunity is really the only way to keep people who cannot be vaccinated against measles safe. You cannot go through public life in BSL-4 gear, if we lose herd immunity to measles, things will get very bad for people who cannot mount an immune defense against the pathogen. Masking is not adequate against an airborne pathogen with numbers like these. We owe it to each other, as a matter of basic human decency, to maintain herd immunity. As a matter of public policy, measles vaccination ought to be required by law except when contraindicated medically.
