One of the reasons we work to free our neighbors from jail is that pretrial detention causes irreparable harm to folks who are already struggling, such as unemployment, homelessness, and loss of custody of children. It destroys families and plunges people deeper into poverty.

And I think we are right now seeing the absolute failure of strategies that appeal to those in power in a system premised on devaluing life in general and certain lives in particular.

This is such an important intervention & one we need to hear over and over. For years I’ve been on a mission to get the left to stop trying to “humanize” people— humanity is our birthright, not something to be proven or earned. But the pressure to appeal can sometimes feel intractable.
