While tthe Republicans will hold the ultimate responsibility, the Democrats' lack of a spine is going to be final nail in the coffin for democracy. Perhaps not in this specific case, but ultimately it will continue to allow Trump and company to continue their authoritarian rise.

It certainly looks like the Democrats are going to cave. They managed to last this long, which is surprising to me. What isn't surprising is that they are going to end up accepting a deal that offers them nothing in return. That's par for the course for them.

I was rewatching A Few Good Men and realized that in today's military, Colonel Jessup would be given a pardon and held up as a standard of how military officers are supposed to act. Current leadership seems to think that the ends justify the means and that people must be toughened up by any means.

Iconoclasm at its finest. A major motivation for this is simply to spread hatred and stoke anger. Another article quotes Josh Hawley on this topic, "I saw it today. It looks fantastic. I'm delighted he is doing it, and I love seeing these liberals melt down."

An illegal action is only illegal if it's unpopular? I suppose that's true when the rule of law breaks down.

Trump Escalates Attacks on Political Opponents After Charlie Kirkβs Killing

Fox News host on mentally ill people who commit crimes: βJust kill themβ
If we're firing news personalities for hateful speech, can we do this one next? I feel like calling for homeless people to undergo "involuntary lethal injection" and for us to "just kill them" is actually worse than what Matthew Dowd said.

That extends to any legal, even if unpopular, speech conducted as a private citizen (as is everything I post on social media) and not as a representative of the government.

The First Amendment, along with the Hatch Act, permits DoD civilians (and other federal employees) to express themselves during their off-duty time. It is well established that it is illegal to fire federal employees for expressing their views or engaging in constitutionally protected speech.

This is also a great example of the weaponization of the federal government, something they falsely claim to be against.

Hegseth says Pentagon βtrackingβ service members, civilians who celebrate Charlie Kirk killing
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is warning civilian and military employees that the Pentagon is βtrackingβ any comments from them that celebrate or mock the Wednesday assassination of conservative aβ¦
This is another example of the GOP's war on the freedom of speech and expression. They absolutely HATE that people are still allowed to disagree with them. They are very much in favor of cancel culture. In fact, it seems they are one of its largest supporters.

Trump appears to again threaten sending troops to Chicago for immigration enforcement
President Trump has targeted Chicago and other Democrat-led cities for expanded federal intervention.
The hatred and lack of respect that our president has for the country that he "leads" is unprecedented. Those individuals who continue to support him and his administration have no regard for the principles this country is founded on.

It's just going to be changed back by the next administration. That's if Congress even allows these clowns to continue to play soldier and pretend that they are big, tough, and important. Until then, it's just them politely asking people to respect their transition and to please not deadname them.

U.S. And Allies Declare Salt Typhoon Hack A National Defense Crisis
FBI and allies declare Salt Typhoon cyber campaign a national defense crisis, exposing Chinese infiltration of global telecom networks across 80 countries.
It's absolutely insane that people are still frequenting Chinese owned websites like Tik-Tok and Temu. Their only goal is how they can destabilize this country. We're doing a good enough job of it ourselves, thank you very much.

Trump signs executive order targeting American flag burning
The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag burning constitutes protected symbolic speech.
Directing the government to find a reason to arrest somebody for constitutionally protected free speech? I don't know why anyone would be upset about flag burning, as it seems like what this flag represents to many people applies to our country less and less nowadays.

As we learned more about the labs and mentors these high school students worked with, many of us realized that the funding for research like these will quickly evaporate with the new federal administration. It's a shame so many will likely not have the same opportunities as these students.
