I think it's funny that Art Makers Aotearoa formed like 5 years ago and all they've done since they came together is push through a law that says "if you resell fine art, the artist gets a cut" rather than doing anything that could actually help workers in nz's creative sector

oh this is standard practice for a lot of creative industries lmao this is called testing and in countries where they have literally any kind of union at all, you typically get paid for it like you do when you trial at a cafe or something, but nz is a joke so 💁🏻‍♀️

you don't even need to have been paid, it's basically just "if the intention is for you to have been paid at some point" which is why you should never do creative work in nz without a contract that explicitly states that copyright/ownership of anything you produce belongs to you

completely legal because in nz we have a thing called the commissioning rule that makes spec work totally legal ✌️
