Frankly, they don’t seem to understand what they’re talking about? Even more frequently detailed comics rely heavily on establishing shots like you said. I think some if their favorite comic artists are just good enough that the reader doesn’t take notice.

My rule of thumb for comic bgs is to make at least the establishing shot’s bg detailed & clear; the rest of the bgs on that page can be drawn in shorthand, if you’re low on time/resources

YMMV but comickers aren’t paid enough to draw all high-detail bgs, & the bg will prob be covered by text anyway
