Today's main character reminds me of the time I saw an American tourist angrily complain to the concierge in an Irish hotel that she couldn't any of the US broadcast networks on the TV in her room. As if it was ENTIRELY reasonable to expect airwaves on this side of the Atlantic to be carrying NBC.

Indeed, And, at the same time, 'Nam Vet becomes a convenient shorthand for a certain type of protagonist. A rugged hero from a war where they fought valiantly but were denied victory. The 80's version of all those tedious Johnny Rebs from classic Hollywood westerns.

The fears it expresses certainly feel prescient. I can't think of many other texts from the time expressing concern about cops having military hardware. I do recall a storyline in Hill Street Blues about Lt Hunter taking delivery of an advanced SWAT vehicle, but that's largely played for laughs

Worth noting too that Blue Thunder was delayed when director John Badham was yanked from post-production on it and parachuted into Wargames as a replacement director. It was shot and intended to open well before 1983, hence preparations for the 84 Olympics being central to its plot.

I think Blue Thunder is very much the transitional fossil between the conspiracy thrillers and cop films of the 70s and the 80's action movie. It has spectacle aplenty, but it distrusts the state.

Blue Thunder is fascinating. The original script skewed closer to Taxi Driver, with the central protagonist being a paranoid schizophrenic with delusions relating to Norse Myth. A script critical of militarised policing softened into one which hits many of the same beats, but more heroically.

It's like Lisa McGee wrote an A24 horror movie.

By that stage in my London years I'd lost count of how many older male celebs I'd seen out and about with bored looking younger women, so seeing Jilly and her pal having what seemed like a very fun afternoon felt like a necessary corrective.
