But much of our focus was on prepping to keep New Yorkers safe during the snowstorm. Thank you to all the sanitation workers & emergency responders, taxi & delivery drivers, healthcare & retail workers, those who clear and salt the snow, repair broken water pipes, and all who keep cities running.

Week 3. This week we protected consumers from hidden hotel junk fees, beat back a lawsuit by DoorDash and Uber to weaken driver protections (the law is meant to stop these cos. from taking $550 million in tips through app manipulation), and got the word out about 3-K and pre-K registration.

If you book a hotel for $200, you should pay $200.

Today, we shut down hotel junk fees and surprise credit card holds. The price you see is the price you pay.

You cannot treat workers like they’re expendable and get way with it. If you don’t play by New York City’s rules, you don’t get to play in NYC.

This week, @mayor.nyc.gov stood with delivery drivers to take action against wage theft and worker exploitation. This lawsuit brought by @hellodcwp.bsky.social is not just an action against one company, it’s a warning to every app-based company from this Administration.

Economic justice must include the ability to participate fully in the life of the city. That means being able to get a job, find a place to live, get a loan, grab a bite to eat, and seek help from City Hall.

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social's vision is an NYC where economic growth & economic justice go hand in hand. That’s only a radical notion because we’ve become so accustomed to economic injustice as the norm.

As the year ends, I’m thinking about what a hard year this was. And how much work we have to do. Which is just one reason the inauguration of Mayor Zohran Mamdani brings me so much joy.

He genuinely believes in a world where everyone is treated with dignity and is willing to set his sights high to build that world. And perhaps just as importantly, he knows that can only happen if we dare to dream of things others have called impossible and if we understand that power must be shared.

I hope you’ll join in his inauguration and the celebration, even if you watch online.
New York City, see you there!

If the US invested in child care and had national policies like paid leave comparable to other industrialized countries, we would generate $775 billion of economic activity a year. The question should not be, β€œhow can we afford to do this?” The question is, β€œhow can we afford not to?” Let’s do this.
