However, analysis is still often focused simply on coverage under existing protected areas, rather than the effectiveness of protection at and among individual sites.

Nevertheless, this trend can only be encouraging, at a critical time for the survival of migratory waterbirds in the flyway.

Papers like this reflect the remarkable upsurge and awareness and interest by Chinese researchers of the critical importance of China for migratory waterbirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway over the past 20 years, including the conservation perspective.

Hmmm, not sure about this, higher reports in poultry vs. wild birds surely a result of more testing and reporting on poultry and little attention to wild birds. Whooper Swan and Hooded Crane do not reach SE Asia, a broader set of, particularly, wildfowl, would be more useful.

I understand why bar-tailed godwits fly thousands of kms from Alaska to Australia, there is no where to land! But plenty of nice spots between St Petersburg and Guinea. Would love to know more on the energetics involved ...

Early this morning #Whimbrel POTSKAR landed in Guinea, W Africa, after flying 7000+km from St-Petersburg, Russia. It took POTSKAR 5.5 days of NON-STOP flight, varying altitude from 10s of meters over the Baltic and the Med, to >5km over land. #ornithology

Poyang Lake in SE China is the place for Spotted Redshanks. A count of 20,000 in November 2013 was considered a conservative estimate!
