On the other side of the world, 96% of entire population (c. 7,000 birds) of the CR Siberian Crane have been forced by dwindling natural food supplies to winter in increasingly crowded conditions around Poyang Lake in SE China, where a single outbreak could be a potential extinction event.

While there is no disconnect scientifically, the climate and nature crises are intrinsically linked, as are the solutions, but institutionally there is often poor communication and coordination among implementing agencies within countries and representation at global fora such as the upcoming COP 30

A critical stopover for shorebirds awaits protection in Malaysia TELUK AIR TAWAR, Malaysia โ€” The tide is rising. On the Teluk Air Tawar-Kuala Muda coast (TAT-KM) of Penang state in Peninsular Malaysia, fishers are boating out to the sea for their morning catch.โ€ฆ

A recent study found only 15% of the sandpiperโ€™s suitable non-breeding habitat is protected, with threats from coastal reclamation, invasive plants and sea-level rise.

Scientists call for prioritizing high-threat wintering areas, especially in Thailand and Myanmar.

However, analysis is still often focused simply on coverage under existing protected areas, rather than the effectiveness of protection at and among individual sites.

Nevertheless, this trend can only be encouraging, at a critical time for the survival of migratory waterbirds in the flyway.

Papers like this reflect the remarkable upsurge and awareness and interest by Chinese researchers of the critical importance of China for migratory waterbirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway over the past 20 years, including the conservation perspective.

Hmmm, not sure about this, higher reports in poultry vs. wild birds surely a result of more testing and reporting on poultry and little attention to wild birds. Whooper Swan and Hooded Crane do not reach SE Asia, a broader set of, particularly, wildfowl, would be more useful.

Poyang Lake in SE China is the place for Spotted Redshanks. A count of 20,000 in November 2013 was considered a conservative estimate!
