You can always try out whatever combo you're thinking on a plastic spoon!
I think it depends on the thickness of the coat! Using a small amount in a thin layer and letting it dry fully will coax a lot of paints into cooperating. Also, generally speaking, water-based acrylics can go on top of but not under other mediums. I've had good luck with Mr. Hobby topcoats myself.
Thank you! I wanted to channel rally racers, I absolutely love non-combat mechs (construction, sports, etc.) and bright pallets.
To back up my talk, here's a model I hand-painted with acrylics, weathering and all. (The kit is a lightly kitbashed 30 Minutes Mission).
I've noticed that a lot of beginner's guides to miniature painting are very brand-focused, and for model painting there's a heavy emphasis on lacquer and enamel paints and airbrushing, none of which are practical for me for various reasons. However, you don't need those to get good results!
