Seeing Maomao talking about the importance of survival & her safety in the palace while she is happily willing to discard her health & self-harm for her experiences... that contradiction needs to be studied in a lab ( & less be treated as something that make her look cool, goofy & quirky)

while taking in account that Maomao has an avoidant attachment style & it takes a lot of times to get out of that mindset once the slowburn, which is realistic in a way

-the anime doesn't do a great job at delivering that from what I gathered. Partially bcos we lack of the internal pov from the novels.
I'll pronounce myself if the romance is better written in the LNs,-

one of the frustrating thing abt the romance is that it's supposed to be a character & social study abt two individual traumatized by their families & raised in sexualized environnements both of them having to deal sexual assaults attempts since they were kids &-

The whole shisui arc feels like a slog to watch & prior to that, things feels a bit too static & off, idk how to explain that.
Maybe because we got introduced w/ really interesting messed up characters, Maomao's parents, prior & everything pale in comparison for example?

What did frustrate you?

ngl i think one of the thing that annoyed me to the point i've stopped reading or watching the anime is the way some ppl woud glaze maomao bcos she's not like the "other female characters✨" or whatever oh, i need the anime to get its shit together & embrace how awful to others & herself she can be

I khope reading it & seeing more of her pov will make me go back to the series bcos I couldn't help but feel frustrated.

It felt like there was something missing & it might be the potential scummy & dark side of her that i want to see explored

& it's apparently the same for Jinshi too 👀

Scenes of the LN showcasing how dark Maomao's mental state can get was depicted in a "oh maomao is doing her weird medical stuff again tehehe" humorous tone in the anime & it got me so frustrated that I just ended up ordering the first volume of the LN.

Thinking about how Rufus is like almost wondering how Judd must feel upon seeing Pamela being killed by Kilmister because he hasn't really experienced yet the pain & grief of seeing someone you care abt in pain & lose them to then being hit with the vision of Elena & Tseng's bloody IDs in AC ✌️

like gleaning at some part of the novels here & there, it seems the author at one point really push far more on the idea of how absolutely messed up she is beyond her medical obsessions due to the way she has been raised & her traumas & now that darkness hurt her but others as well and it's so 👀

Maomao does apparently a really shitty & cruel thing to some characters 👀, it legit make me want to pick up the novels despite that i stopped watching/reading the manga/anime mid season 2
