What characteristics of dead wood promote fungal species richness in forests? And how can we use this information to manage fungal biodiversity?
New research on the functional diversity of dead wood in Norwegian forests provides some answers.

New #Preprint! 📢
A direct result of a roundtable discussion at the 2024 workshop on arthropod-associated fungal parasites and pathogens. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it! "Ecology and management perspectives in arthropod–fungal associations": doi.org/10.22541/au....

In this review in Fungal Ecology, Håvard Kauserud (@drhyfe.bsky.social) argues that while the ITS region is by far the best DNA (meta)barcoding marker for fungi, we should not use it naively or simplistically doi.org/10.1016/j.fu...
The deadline is coming up soon - Submit your abstract now!
🍄New publication! Our FunDive paper on mycological societies in Europe, a collaborative effort involving 44 authors from 29 countries, is now published in Biodiversity and Conservation. Many thanks to all co-authors, reviewers & editors! 🔗 doi.org/10.1007/s105...

New paper! Here we present the history, geographical distribution, and structure of organizations in #mycology across #Europe, as well as their activities—including journals, magazines, meetings, educational initiatives, and #citizenscience projects. doi.org/10.1007/s105... #FunDive
Congratulations to Dr Toby Kiers, winner of the @tylerprize.bsky.social Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement 🌱
Her ERC-funded research revealed how underground plant-fungal networks sustain life on Earth and shape global conservation thinking.

📣 The deadline for this @britmycolsoc.org.uk special issue on fungal conservation has been extended to 15th March 2026.
Spread the word and don’t hesitate to contact @cfemycolab.bsky.social or me if you have any questions.
We’re looking forward to receiving your submissions! 🍄
Last month, we organized a workshop on FUNGAL PHYLOGENOMICS, with 16 participants from Czechia, Hungary, Italy, and Poland. I presented an open lecture about #Laboulbeniomycetes (of course 😊🍄🪲). The workshop was funded through our Visegrad Fund grant no. 22420237.
Hi friends—consider this 👇
Let’s work together to bring amazing mycologists together in South Korea in 2027!

Coming to the @egu.eu General Assembly in 2026? Consider submitting an abstract to our mycorrhizae session if you are working on these organisms and their linkages to ecosystem functioning. Last year, this new session was a huge hit, so let's make year two even better!
Thrilled to announce that the special issue on fungal #conservation that @cfemycolab.bsky.social and I are co-editing for the @britmycolsoc.org.uk c.org.uk journal Fungal Ecology is open for submissions!

A fun commentary with @christinakaiser.bsky.social inspired by a very cool paper in New Phyt by @fungidownunder.bsky.social et al. showing that EcM fungal functional traits affect soil C responses to elevated CO2. EcM species and traits really matter!

A state-funded survey across California has uncovered hundreds of fungi new to science, part of a first-of-its-kind biodiversity effort.
Often overlooked, fungi support plant growth and store carbon — knowledge that could guide conservation and forest restoration as wildfires intensify.
This is it! Frederik De Wint is defending his #PhD on entomopathogenic fungi and interactions with their hosts along environmental gradients. It was a pleasure to work together with Frederik and I am looking forward to continue working together (he applied for a postdoc position in my group).
Researchers have compiled the first fungal checklist for Honduras, resulting in a dataset containing 1365 species across 4011 records.

This #postdoc position is now officially advertised: www.dannyhaelewaters.com/opening-for-.... #hiring #newPI #CzechScienceFoundation #LFEE
Did you publish with researchers outside your lab during grad school? Or published as faculty with a student not under your supervision?
I’m collecting examples of cross-lab collaboration in graduate training.
Please share your experience & this post!

Since I am getting more and more invited for presentations, workshops, and roundtable discussions, I decided to add a PRESENTING page to my website, drawing inspiration from friends and colleagues. Have a look if you're curious about what I offer. www.dannyhaelewaters.com/presenting/
Our lab’s first paper is out! 📢
A multi-year effort resulted in the checklist of fungi for #Honduras — a major milestone that is the starting point for future research. Congratulations to Libelje on publishing the first chapter of her #PhD! doi.org/10.3897/myco... #LFEE #LuminaQuaeruntur
“Overall, these findings suggest that the value of natural history collections as global research infrastructure is eroding due to decreased collecting of specimen data across species, locations, and time.“ doi.org/10.1038/s414... Interesting analysis based on @gbif.org data.
Happy to share that the 11th contribution to the Fungal Systematics and Evolution series published by Sydowia is now online! Really glad to have had the chance to co-edit it with @dhaelewa.bsky.social and Irmgard Krisai-Greilhuber. Enjoy the read!

The lab will soon also advertise a new PhD position. This student will be studying either multitrophic interactions of bats, bat flies, and microfungi, or entomopathogenic fungi. Spread the word! #hiring #LFEE #newPI
A few years ago, I said yes to editing a book about fungal #parasites and #pathogens. After endless revisions, emails, and deadline reminders, it’s finally coming together. The book will be out in 2026, but 11 chapters are already online as #Preprints. www.dannyhaelewaters.com/preprints-of...
We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher to support the Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution, and join our project studying obligatory multitrophic interactions. jobs.bc.cas.cz/en/detail/266 #LFEE #LuminaQuaeruntur #postdoc #hiring
I have an opening for a postdoctoral position in my Laboratory of Fungal Ecology and Evolution at the Biology Centre CAS, Institute of Entomology, in České Budějovice, Czechia. www.dannyhaelewaters.com/opening-for-... #LFEE #postdoc #hiring
