You can actually get start trails in light polluted places, just looks a bit different obviously. Check out Alyn Wallace's tutorial, he does it in his back yard. This was a collection of about 200 exposures over the course of 2 hours. I had to blend the foreground and sky layer separately.

In this case I timed it with the moonrise behind the Arch

If you're talking about what I think, they're either clouds getting lit up by the moonrise behind the arch or "air glow". I'm not really sure :)

I went out to capture this image for a second time which I think turned out much better than the first, but what do you think? Keep in mind no light painting was used and isn't allowed in Utah National Parks.

It was cloudy in Moab :( did you have to stack another image to get those few stars or were they just there naturally?

I made a last minute decision to go out the other night on a full moon. I wanted to see what some star trails looked like under the "not so dark skies." It was a good experience as it always is but I wish I could have scouted the location first to get a better composition.

I can't remember exactly for this one but I usually use the NPF rule or rule of 300 to get close. All my lenses are f/1.8 or wider which helps a lot lol
