I think there's a lot of wishful thinking that Rayner, Burnham or those particular factions would be any better when the buck stops and they're under severe electoral pressure (mainly because of the difficult economic/tax situation, which would be unchanged for any leader of any party).

I see little conviction, never mind moral backbone, to seriously combat the vitriolic narrative, across the board. Any positive comment is met with caveats, any effort to fight back against the far-right ("with everything we have") essentially is answered with agreeing with that overall narrative.

The thing is, there's no indication really that any of the favourites to replace Starmer would be minded to have a softened approach on immigration.

Home Office has so often contradicted the rhetoric of Starmer in recent months, either in their own rhetoric or policy- that he is allowing it, ignoring it or either way does not see the contradiction between him occasionally condemning Reform's language, but his own govt's tone which encourages it

"We will fight you with everything we have got" just means moving the overton window that ever bit further to the far-right.

What really strikes me is their utter inability to see how this sort of language is not just morally wrong, but very clearly helps their opponents.
