Did you know we have California bay laurel in San Diego County? Umbellularia californica is a large hardwood tree native to coastal forests. The tree's pungent leaves have a similar flavor to bay leaves, though stronger, and it may be mistaken for bay laurel.
Eriodictyon parryi aka poodle dog bush. Not many people are familiar with this plant in SoCal. It is notable for secreting a severe skin irritant and can send some people to the hospital. It is an opportunistic species that grows mostly in areas that have been disturbed by fire.
