It's terrifying out here in #AcademicSky... and yet I'm still willing to give it a whirl. At least for now.

Join me for my latest blog as I share some reflections on the uncertainty (and maybe thrill??) of careers in the academic sector 🤔

We flirted with a billion birds again tonight, not quite reaching it, but still a bunch of birds on the move as that front with favorable north winds drew east.

screenshot of the paragraph in which my research on traffic impact assessment is cited. The text reads: "Adaptation is an effort to modify movement patterns to suit specific requirements, such as adjusting, changing, rearranging, revising, and adding variations. Meanwhile, origination is creating new movement patterns to suit certain situations or problems, such as designing, composing, building, creating, constructing, and creating something new (Combs, McDonald, and Leimenstoll 2023)."

I am increasingly baffled...and alarmed.

What is the value of citations--one of the primary ways academics are judged--if they are generated through #AI #slop?

Your Code Will Be Dead in Ten Years But Your Ideas (Hopefully) Won’t Be

Sorry to say it, but if you're a Ph.D. student, chances are that your code will not live long past your degree. Instead, you should strive for separating your research contribution from their implementation (which counts as validation). Read more:

I love how Blue Velvet becomes David Lynch's version of a "coming of age" story. You imagine that you're all grown up and then you go on a joyride with Frank Booth and learn that adulthood is a parade of countless unknowable and bizarre cruelties. Your childhood hometown is full of severed ears.

Is reading always better for your brain than listening to audiobooks? Reading books and listening to audiobooks tap into different elements of cognition, each with their own benefits. So which one should you choose, and when?
